You can call your insurance company to determine if private speech therapy is a covered benefit.
When you call your insurance company, be sure to have the following information available:
- Your name, your insurance ID & Group number, and other identifying information

Questions You May Want To Ask:
- Under what circumstances is speech therapy covered?
- Are there any restrictions such as age, number of visits, etc?
In order to be in compliance with the regulations set forth by insurance companies, a doctor’s referral or prescription, also called a doctor’s “script”, is needed for us to provide a speech evaluation and speech treatment. Private pay patients do not require a doctor’s referral.
Each insurance creates its own authorization procedure, including the type of paperwork they require and the amount of speech therapy they will authorize. They may have a preset number of visits that they allow or may review each patient on a case by case basis to determine the amount of therapy that is medically necessary. Insurances typically range in their authorizations, allowing 1 time per week for 30 minutes to as much as 3 times per week for 1 hour each session. Other insurances may not authorize any speech therapy services, even if the child presents with a delay or disorder.
